SWAMI SARANAM
The Ayyappa Devastanam at Ayyappanagar, Mettuguda, Secunderabad, which today functions as a spiritual center for thousands of devotees of Lord Ayyappa not only in the twin cities but also from neighbouring districts, is the realization of a dream the devotees of the Lord had about a quarter century ago. It was a vision of a few. The untiring efforts of several, the wholehearted cooperation of many and above all, the blessings of Lord Ayyappa that made this dream come true.
Started in the year 1970 when a few devotees of the Lord, residing at Railway Colony, Mettuguda, formed themselves into an Ayyappa Bhakta Samithi with the intention of conducting Ayyappa Pooja celebrations. The Mandala Pooja celebrations, which started on a small scale, gradually expanded into a major event every year with the cooperation of the devotees. In 1976, the Ayyappa Bhakta Samithi was registered as Ayyappa Bhakta Samajam, and today there are 835 life members.
Over the years, the devotional activities of the Samajam became increasingly popular as was evidenced by the large attendance and offerings at the Mandala Pooja and other related activities. It was this enthusiastic cooperation of the devotees that enabled the Samajam to think in terms of Temple. So a piece of land was acquired at Mettuguda in the year 1982.
An Ashtamangalya Prasnam conducted in March 1984 by Brahmasri Easwaran Namboodiripad, Guruvayoor, revealed that a temple could be constructed at the site after necessary purification of the land by performing certain rituals including Bhoomi Pooja, Sudarsana Homam, etc. Accordingly, a week long rituals were performed in June 1984. The Mandala Pooja in 1984 was performed at our own premises where the temple stands today.
Efforts for the construction of the temple began in right earnest after Ashtamangalya Prasnam and Sudarsana Homam. The Samajam received overwhelming support from the devotees and the work of constructing the temple went steadily ahead.
The renowned temple architect of Kerala, Sri Kanippayyur Krishnan Namboodiripad prepared the layout and the design of the temple. The foundation stone was laid by His Holiness Sri Sri Bharati Theertha Swamigal, H. H. Jagadguru Sankaracharya of Sringeri Peetam, on 8th Sep, 1985.
The efforts of the Samajam bore fruit on 7th June, 1987, when the temple was consecrated by Brahmasri Neelakantararu Thantri of Thazmom Madam, Chengannur, Kerala, the traditional High Priest of Sabarimala. Besides Lord Ayyappa, the presiding deity at the Devastanam, there are temples of Lord Ganapathy, Venkateswara, Subrahmanya, Devi and Nagaraja. The Pooja at the temples are conducted by poojaris from Kerala according to tantric rites.
